Level 2 Diploma: Groundwork Apprentice (HS2)

What is HS2?

HS2 is a brand new, low carbon high-speed railway critical in supporting the UK’s economic growth and tackling climate change. It will provide much-needed rail capacity and is integral to increased economic growth – helping to improve connectivity, create jobs and support the UK economy. Construction of HS2 is underway and the project is already supporting thousands of jobs and businesses around the country.

Job Purpose

As a Groundworker you will work closely with supervisors and engineers in interpreting design specifications to prepare the site ready for the structural building works to take place. The work includes the preparation of sub-surfaces, the installation and construction of roads, pedestrian pathways and landscaping.

Accountabilities

There will be a range of duties including:

  • Installing and testing site drainage and ducting
  • Building and dismantling access/working platforms
  • Locate and excavate to expose buried utility services
  • Install, maintain and remove temporary protection and safety arrangements on site
  • Direct and guide the movement of vehicles, plant and machinery on site
  • Move, handle and store resources complying with relevant legislation and polices
  • Using and maintaining power tools and equipment
  • Access, interpret and use drawings and specifications

Skills/Experience

The following experience is required:

  • Ability to interpret and follow verbal and written work instructions from supervisors and site managers
  • Undertaking work in a reliable, safe and productive manner
  • Able to work effectively within a team
  • CSCS card required

Apprenticeship Overview

  • Apprentices without Level 1 English and Maths will need to achieve this level during the apprenticeships and take the test for Level 2 English and Maths prior to taking end point assessment
  • Duration is 18 months
