Foster Care Fortnight 2021: Why we care

Published: 10th May 2021

Birmingham Children’s Trust is supporting Foster Care Fortnight to raise awareness of the positive impact foster carers make in the lives of thousands of children and young people.

Foster Care Fortnight is an annual campaign organised by the Fostering Network. It is an opportunity to learn more about fostering, hear from foster carers themselves and find out what makes fostering so extraordinary.

This year, the theme for Foster Care Fortnight is #WhyWeCare. Throughout the campaign we’ll be showcasing the reasons why our foster carers are committed to fostering in Birmingham.

What is fostering?

Some children are not able to live with their own birth family and need a safe place to live. A foster home offers these children a safe place to live for a few days, weeks months or sometimes even years.

Fostering means providing a child with all the things that any family would, food, warmth, shelter, love, care, support with health and education.

#WhyWeCare

Fostering is a career like no other. It is a chance to transform a child’s life and your own. Don’t take our word for it, watch the video to find out what our foster carers have to say.

Why foster with Birmingham Children’s Trust?

There are around 2,000 children in care in Birmingham. At Birmingham Children’s Trust, we are responsible for all these children and their wellbeing. This means that when you foster with us you:

  • will foster a local child
  • will have your first foster child placed with you soon after approval
  • have the best chance of working as a fostering carer every week of the year, with no long gaps in between short-term placements

We pride ourselves on being a not-for profit organisation. This means that the children are at the heart of everything we do. As our Head of Service Tracy Collins explains, “I constantly ask myself, is this good enough for my child? It’s about taking the best possible care of the children and young people and listening to them.”

When you foster for Birmingham Children’s Trust, you join Birmingham’s Biggest Family. We offer 24/7 support and continual training so you can progress in your fostering career.
